About

Film Burner is an independent film and television journal built around reviews, analysis, opinion and thoughtful writing about screen culture.

We are interested in new releases, but not only new releases. A film can be worth discussing because it has just opened in cinemas, because it has been rediscovered decades later, or because it says something interesting about the culture and period that produced it.

Reviews with an argument

Our reviews are intended to do more than summarise plots or deliver a quick verdict.

The best criticism explains why something works, why it does not, and what a film or television programme is trying to achieve. That means paying attention to writing, performance, direction, form and context rather than treating criticism as a checklist.

Looking beyond the release cycle

Film Burner is also interested in the films and television programmes that remain worth discussing long after their original release.

That includes classics, overlooked work, documentaries, genre cinema and older television, as well as the wider trends that shape what gets made and how audiences respond to it.

Our interest in nostalgia is not simply about remembering old favourites. Revisiting earlier work can reveal how filmmaking, television, audiences and cultural assumptions have changed, as well as why some stories continue to endure.

Opinion without the noise

Film and television invite disagreement, and good criticism should make room for it.

We prefer a clear argument to manufactured outrage. Where an article is reporting a factual development, we aim to source it properly. Where a writer is offering a judgement, we want that judgement to be clear, considered and supported by the work being discussed.

An independent film journal

Film Burner is not tied to a studio, distributor or streaming service.

Our aim is to publish writing that remains interesting after the opening weekend has passed, whether the subject is a major release, an overlooked documentary, a television drama or a film from decades ago.

That independence also means we do not need to treat every trailer, casting rumour or publicity announcement as a story. We would rather publish fewer pieces with a clear reason for existing.
